MSR Alpine Bowl
I've seen stainless steel bowls of similar shape and size for around
$20. This bowl is negligibly heavier than a similar sized plastic bowl
but is much more durable.

The main advantages versus plastic is the ability to use it as a pot to
heat food directly. It's also more durable if that's important to you.

The disadvantages are that you'll need to insulate your lap or use
something to hold the bowl if you're eating very hot foods. Unlike the
plastic which doesn't conduct heat as readily, I noticed that eating a
just-heated chili required using a cloth napkin to hold the bowl. That's
a minor point though. Others have said that metal can leave an
aftertaste versus plastic but I did not notice this.
You can use
it to heat water. However, if you plan on using a pair of needlenose
pliers to hold the bowl (like those found on the Leatherman Wave or
Victorinox Spirit) keep in mind that there's a lip around the edge that
makes this tricky.
